Year 3 & 4

Year 3, 4 & 5 Summer Term Overview

We’re really looking forward to the Summer Term in Years 3, 4 and 5. It’s shaping up to be a busy and exciting term, with lots of opportunities for the children to explore new ideas, get creative, and build on what they’ve already learnt this year.

In English, we’ll be diving into some fantastic texts. The children will explore Shackleton’s Journey, where they’ll learn about resilience and leadership, and enjoy stepping into the magical world of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. We’ll also have some fun with language through the poem Jabberwocky. These texts will inspire a range of writing and help develop reading and discussion skills.

In Maths, we’ll continue to build confidence across all the key areas, including number, calculation, fractions, time, money, statistics and geometry. A big focus will be on applying these skills to solve problems and explain thinking clearly.

Our Science work this term includes learning about animals including humans, with a focus on nutrition and digestion, as well as exploring electricity. The children will have plenty of opportunities for hands-on investigations, particularly when building and testing circuits.

In RE, we’ll be thinking about the idea of pilgrimage and why it is important to people of different faiths. We’ll also be exploring the question: What kind of world did Jesus want? encouraging thoughtful discussion and reflection.

Our History topic, Explorers – Confronting Snow and Ice, will look at what it takes to be an explorer. We’ll learn about a range of inspiring individuals, including Alexandra David-Neel, Matthew Henson and Ernest Shackleton, as well as Prince Harry’s involvement in Walking With The Wounded.

In Geography, we’ll be looking at settlements and considering what makes a good place to live. The children will explore how communities are formed and what helps them to thrive.

PE lessons this term will include gymnastics, tennis, ball skills and athletics, and will continue to be on Monday’s and Wednesday’s we’re already looking forward to Sports Day later in the term—a great opportunity for everyone to get involved and show their team spirit.

In Art, the children will be working with sculpture and 3D forms, exploring shape and space in creative ways. In DT, they’ll be designing and building their own slingshot cars, which is always a fun and practical project.

Our PSHE lessons will focus on Relationships and Changing Me, supporting the children’s understanding of themselves and others. In Computing, we’ll be developing touch typing skills, introducing AI, and continuing with coding. In Music, the children will be practising The Dragon Song on glockenspiels as they prepare for a performance.

As always, we’ll be sharing updates and photos on Class Dojo, so please do keep an eye out for those. If you have any questions at all, don’t hesitate to get in touch.

We’re looking forward to a great term ahead!
